Sinfonia Tragica

Martyn Brabbins' Tragica

Posted: 6 January 2017

The BBC studio performance of the symphony no. 6, the Sinfonia Tragica took place on Tuesday October 11th at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios in London, given by Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, led by Stephen Bryant. The programme began with Edmund Rubbra’s 11th symphony and was followed by Launy Grondahl's trombone concerto, with soloist Jorgen van Rijen, who is principal trombone of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra.

The performance of the Tragica that closed the proceedings was infused with the attention to detail and pacing that has become characteristic of Martyn Brabbins' performances of Havergal Brian.

The performance was available to hear on the BBC Radio 3 website until 20th December 2016, but is now no longer available. The performance will however soon be incorporated into the online streaming Recordings Library that is available to members of the HBS as one of three recent performances that will be added. If you wish to hear these performances but are not yet a member of the Society, please consider joining.
