Bach Choir concert

'Best of British' featuring RVW, Elgar and MacMillan

Posted: 17 May 2017

The Bach Choir is one of the UK's largest and finest London-based independent choirs. As part of their 'Best of British' series, the Bach Choir is performing Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony at London's Royal Festival Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday 29th June 2017. The concert will also feature the world premiere of a new commission by James MacMillan, and the Elgar cello concerto, played by Raphael Wallfisch, who recorded Havergal Brian's cello concerto for Dutton.

The soloists will be Sally Matthews (soprano) and Roderick Williams (baritone) - readers may well remember this vocal team's marvellous contribution to the Sea Symphony at the First Night of the Proms in 2013 under Sakari Oramo (2013 Proms performance on YouTube). Roddy recorded Havergal Brian's symphony no. 5 Wine of Summer for Dutton a couple of years ago to great acclaim. The Bach Choir performed in both the 1980 and 2011 Royal Albert Hall performances of Havergal Brian's Gothic symphony.

The orchestra for this concert will be the Philharmonia, conducted by the Choir's Musical Director, David Hill. Tickets are available from the Royal Festival Hall box office. Use this link to visit the RFH box office.
