How to hear sound excerpts

This site is offered by the Havergal Brian Society, a UK Registered Charity as part of its remit to promote knowledge and understanding of the composer Havergal Brian and his music.  The Society continues to be very grateful to Len Mullenger for having providing space for HB site content free of charge on his Classical Music on the Web site in the site's early days, and for his prompt and efficient assistance in loading new material.

The site provides a genuinely comprehensive and detailed source of information on Brian.  Indeed it is one of the largest and most thorough of any site on the world-wide web devoted to any single composer.  Construction was started in September 1998 and the site was first published on the web on 29 January 1999:  the 123rd anniversary of HB's birth. It is currently being enlarged under a new webmaster and currently runs to more than 500 pages.

The site includes more than 210 articles - derived largely from the Newsletters published to date by the Havergal Brian Society - on all aspects of Brian' s life and music.  Brian was a prolific writer on music as well as of music (his compositional career ran from the late 1890s to the late 1960s) and the website reflects this dual career.   He was a perceptive, intelligent writer and this site contains more than 125 articles (with more to come) which reflect the diversity of Brian's musical life.

The website has been designed to achieve optimum download times and ease of reading.

The HBS can only continue to function with regular income.  If you have found this website informative and useful, please consider supporting us by either becoming a member, making use of the advantages that carries, or by making a donation to help our work in making scores and information available, sponsoring recording and promoting Brian in other ways such as this website.  Please visit the Society page for more information.

How the site is organised

Everything is easily accessed from the menu at the left of the screen.  The site has a 'flat' structure.   Either a menu item takes you directly to what you want or to an index of items (occasionally to an index of indexes).

search Music on the Web offers a good search facility.  The worldwide web may be searched using an engine such as Google

All articles:  Lists all the articles on this website.  Every one of these articles is also referenced elsewhere:  e.g., articles about a symphony are referenced on that symphony's title page, book reviews are referenced on the bibliography pages, and so on.

New articlesPages appearing for the first time, or substantially modified, in the current issue or in the previous issue.

LIFEThere is a section of the site devoted to Havergal Brian, the man, offering an introduction and links to articles, reminiscences and a detailed chronology.

MUSIC:  Inevitably the largest section of the website, this section covers all Brian's music.  You can access the details in various ways from the menu items described below.  There's an introductory article, links to other general articles on his music and to the chronology here.

WEB ARCHIVE The newest section is dedicated to items of Brian interest, such as programme and ticket reproductions. Also present in this archive will be photographs and images of other Brian memorabilia. This feature appears on the Brian sub-site, which is accessible to society members.

IndexThis gives direct access to the index of all extant compositions.   Each extant work [other than the songs, which are dealt with 'en masse'], and many of the lost works, has a set of pages, each preceded by a 'title page'.  These are indexed here.  The title page contains the basic information about each work, namely:

»   More detailed information about composition, dates of drafts etc
»   Musicians required, and any comments

»

»   Further reading on the work, where available, in the form of refereces to substantial articles in books and periodicals
»   List of all known performances (excluding songs, this information is 98+% complete and accurate)
»   Complete list of commercial recordings.
