STOP PRESS: GOTHIC SYMPHONY SERIES FEATURED ON USA RADIO

This week Brian’s Gothic Symphony is being featured along with Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder over five programmes in the radio series Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin at 7pm Chicago time (UTC -6 hours). The series is produced by WFMT in Chicago and broadcast on around 40 stations in the USA as well as stations in Brisbane (4MBS Classic FM), Melbourne (3MBS FM) and Canberra (Artsound FM) in Australia. The title of the week’s programs is Too darn big - for radio. General Manager of 4MBS Classic FM, Brisbane and HBS member Gary Thorpe recorded an interview for the programme about the Brisbane Gothic. The broadcasts feature the Brabbins recording. This is one of the top classical radio programs in the USA and as such is a great promotion for Brian. You can listen online via the links above.

IN THE NEXT HBS NEWSLETTER...

The January/February 2012 issue of the Society's bi-monthly Newsletter (no. 219) will feature the second of two Building-A-Library-type reviews of recorded Gothic performances plus a CD recommendation, plus part two of the article on percussion in the Gothic. Join the HBS and read all about it!

IN MEMORIAM TO BE PERFORMED IN BRISTOL IN FEBRUARY 2012

Bristol’s University Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Pickard will be performing Brian’s In Memoriam along with Fire at Durilgai by John McCabe at the Auditorium, Victoria Rooms, Queens Road, Bristol BS8 1SA as part two of a concert beginning at 7.30pm on Saturday 11th February, 2012. Part one comprises the University Chamber Orchestra conducted by Aaron Taylor in works by Beethoven and Saint-Saëns. If you are local to Bristol, please come along and support the performance.

JOIN THE CELEBRATION!

November 2012 sees the fortieth anniversary of the death of Havergal Brian. There are already plans to perform three of Brian's orchestral works in the UK in the anniversary year, including two of the symphonies.

If you represent an orchestra or choir, or are a soloist interested in performing music by Brian to mark his anniversary, we can provide

advice on repertoire and publicise your concert on the website.  Full details of the required forces for all Brian's works are here.

Following the Proms performance of The Gothic, public awareness of Brian has never been so high.  Now is an ideal time to present some of his other, less massive pieces.  With your help, 2012 will be a year to remember for lovers of Brian's music.

PAYPAL

It is now possible to join the Society or renew your subscription, or make any other payments or donations by using the PayPal system. Clicking the buttons will take you direct to the Society's PayPal account. A great example of what donations can achieve is the release in December 2009 of Sir Adrian Boult's legendary performance of the  'Gothic' symphony, in the composer's presence.

WEB SHOPPING AT HBS

The Havergal Brian Society has linked up with web-shopping portal buy.at. This means that if you routinely buy CDs - or anything else - online, then if you do it through buy.at by clicking the buy.at logo or the link above, then the stores concerned will pay a commission to the HBS for the purchase.

As a purchaser, all you need to do is to access your online shopping needs via the buy.at portal by clicking on the links on this page - that's all there is to it. You will be helping the HBS in fundraising by doing what you normally do.

If you don't yet shop on-line - why not do it from the HBS homepage.

The Havergal Brian bust (featured on the site entry page) was created in 1967, by artist Robert Thomas A.R.C.A., F.R.B.S. in bronze.

The Society logo was designed by R Leonard Hollands.
